TIE THIS!

Will-Tying-His-ShoesAfter talking about doing it for months and hearing about everyone else’s kids learning how to tie their shoes (isn’t keeping up with the Jones’ rough?!?), I finally decided that today was the day. Tomorrow starts 1st grade for Will and I know how hard it was for him to not lose any teeth while the other kids were losing them. I figured THIS milestone we could do something about to be sure he wasn’t behind the curve.

I tried at first to teach him the bunny ears method (because that’s what I use) and realized that it’s really hard to hold all those loops tight! I remembered pinning something about an easy way to teach your kid to tie their shoes in 5 minutes. At the time I pinned it, I probably thought “yeah right… add that to the boards and boards of awesome stuff I’ll never do,” but this time it came in handy. I watched the video once by myself, tried to tie his shoes, and failed horribly. After a couple tries, Will says “Maybe we should watch the video again.” Smartie pants. So we did – still no luck.

It wasn’t until we watched the point of view video that we really got it. It slows down the process and shows it from the direction you would be tying your own shoe.  VOILA! Shoes tied easy peasy! It took Will maybe 3 or 4 times to figure it out with me having to make sure he was grabbing the right laces, turning the right way, etc. He’s still not tying them super tight, but it maybe took us all of 35-40 minutes to get to the point he’s at in the video below. Pretty good for something I thought would take hours, days or weeks!!

Because Will has ADHD and other behavioral challenges, I am ESPECIALLY proud that he didn’t give up and he kept trying until he got it. Way to go buddy!
